The Plant Life Study is a series of environmental portraits of organic life. I approached them as I do all of my subjects: with great curiosity and respect.

These specimens were all left with roots intact and no broken limbs. They were illuminated only by the great fire in the sky. Some of my subjects might be mistaken for a lowly weed by the average eye, and soon be plucked from the earth or mowed down by machine; but, I see past their unpolished appearance and capture the beauty  in their lovely textures. Focusing through a 300mm macro lens, I am able to get to the finer details without disturbing so much as a delicate petal or leaf. I chose to present them in a monochromatic format because without the distraction of their color, they can be viewed and evaluated on the merits of their individuality.

The Plant Life series are mixed media pieces are each one of a kind. No two will ever be exactly the same.

The Double Springs series explores the question of what are the chances we are here right now. Do we owe our life to the divine laws of nature or is it just a random series of events that create our accidental existence? Is it fate that I am here? What mysteries from the past make me who I am today? Of course, this work does not provide any answers, just more questions, as I imagine the mothers before mine.

What started out as a simple day of sightseeing in a strange new town, accompanied by the hope of finding people excited by their surroundings, people finding joy (even if only momentarily), slowly became a sojourn in solitude.  Everywhere, everyone seemed very alone.  Uninvolved with those around them or, more accurately, unaware of those around them – the way you imagine you got used to the sensation of clothes when you were a small child and can now have rough denim or buttoned collars against your skin without thought.

I think photography is an amazing medium that can capture an entire story within a single frame. It only takes a second to capture an image but the story that image may tell can last for years. People inspire me; looking into someone’s eyes and to capture that moment of truth about their lives is an unbelievable feeling. I never plan out my next shot. I allow the moment to be as real as possible. I travel to places that interest me and talk to the people I find there. I try to connect with each person that I photograph and I feel that connection shows in the pictures.

Documenting people in India was a difficult task. To capture such a proud group of people in such poor conditions was challenging. I wanted to show what I saw but not focus on conditions. In the end, I hope the joy of the people that I met and their individual personalities show in my work.

 As I came upon a mysterious door lettered with Utopia (albeit missing some letters) , several questions were posed to me; What exactly IS my vision of Utopia? Do we even know it when we see it? Is there a way to access it? I took these questions and photographs to the darkroom and began to explore the questions, and what emerged were these secret doors, seemingly abandoned to insects and lizards, that one might want to knock upon after working one's way through an enchanted forest.

I am a retired physician who has been actively involved in photography for the past 40 years. My favorite subjects are scenics, wildlife, horses and abstracts. Many of my images are taken with an infra-red converted digital camera. I now teach corel painter, digital infrared photography and photoshop at the Digital Technology Centre in Sarasota, Fl.  Along with two of my sons I own a photographic gallery in Newport R.I. called Moonlight a gallery.
