St. Pete Council votes on new Pier today at 3PM.

The $50 Million Sidewalk

St. Pete Council votes on new Pier today at 3PM.

Built in 1973, the inverted pyramid of the St. Petersburg pier has been a part of the skyline for as long as many of us can remember. In today's city council meeting, a vote will be convened which would replace the landmark with a proposed "seawalk", budgeted to cost $50 Million, and begin construction in 2014. It is the last opportunity for citizens of the Burg to have input over the future of the waterfront downtown before the major architectural work begins.

Polling regarding the new project shows lackluster support, with only 29% in support of the new design, and 58% in favor of renovating the existing structure. Many have cited concern that the new design displaces businesses like The Columbia Restaurant and Jonny Reno's without providing any new small business opportunities, potentially reducing jobs and revenue during a still struggling economic recovery.

VoteOnThePier.com is circulating a petition requesting that the decision regarding the Pier renovation be put to a public referendum. They plan to attend the vote today, and present the 13,000 signatures they've already collected. Mayor Bill Foster has stated that if the petition reaches the required numbers, it will be added to the ballot, noting "We, as elected officials, can’t ignore it."

What do you think? Vote in ThePatch.com's Online Poll, and get details about today's meeting at StPete.org.

Art in the Burg

Artist Profile: Marc Levasseur

Marc Levasseur is a St. Peterburg based visual artist who's been described as a visionary; a master of utilizing light, color, shadows and texture and deeply connected to creating in the moment. His work is exhibited through out the U.S., and on Tuesday, May 22nd, St. Petersburg residents will have the opportunity to watch Marc in action as he paints live on stage at Duet, a concert and live art show at The Palladium.

Marc's artwork successfully balances whimsy with depth, quickly reeling from playful swirls of color to darkly poignant moments of human fragility. Tuesday's live performance will see him rendering the mood on canvas as internationally acclaimed Jazz vocalist Fred Johnson and New York Pianist Daniel Kelly present a collection of both original compositions and songs from the great American songbook.
